After working on countless songs and albums, Professional Mixing & Mastering engineers develop an acute sense of sonic and musical knowledge that is key to successful Mixing and (or) Mastering. It’s also a huge plus that the Mix or Mastering engineer wasn‘t there when you recorded and (or) mixed your material. Hearing your songs for the first time, with a fresh pair of ears can offer truly objective advice which is KEY to having your songs sound PERFECT. When you work on your own song from recording to mixing to mastering you are hearing the same thing over and over for hours and hours. Your ears begin to not know the difference between right and wrong and more importantly what's missing.
Professional tools are getting more affordable and more people are learning how to use them, so in that sense, the process is definitely being democratized. HOWEVER, Professional experience and trained ears are not easily purchased, so not everyone will get a great result, even with the right tools.
Not knocking people who are here to learn and get better at Mixing and Mastering, that is great! Keep working on your skills, Mix and Master as many songs as you can. HOWEVER if you are looking to put out your music to the world and want things to sound the best it can be to get ahead in today's music industry, there's nothing better than handing your music off to a professional.
So before you are quick to say “No Thanks, I Mix & Master my own stuff” Think about what you can really be missing. You may think your music sounds great, BUT how will it sound done by a Professional?
